The girl was taken to the Daily Care Ward in Non-public Medical Care Institution in Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Center for Disabled Children in Zamość on September 6th, 1999, when she was 11 years old. At that time, the strength of her muscles was assessed with a scale of 2-3 scores represented by Lovet test, she was able to stand up from her wheelchair, to walk short distances with somebody’s assistance, but needed some help with her everyday activities. She had some reductions of chattel and contractions as far as joints of upper and lower limbs are concerned, as well as left-hand scoliosis of the spine. From the moment she was placed in hospital, despite applying continuous treatment, a constant progress of the illness was observed, which revealed in further decrease of her muscle strength and physical efficiency along with limitation of functional abilities (she was not able to change her position by herself, she used the wheelchair all the time and needed help with her everyday activities). Since 2000, the girl has been wearing an orthopedic stay because of the progressive curvature of the spine.
The first symptoms suggesting the beginning of respiratory incapacity began last year in the form of acute dyspnoea – she was taken to the hospital in Zamość then. Since that time the child’s condition had been quite stable up to a crisis which occurred in December last year – pneumonia with growing acute respiratory incapacity requiring artificial ventilation.
From that time (December 2000) to June of 2003 Monika stayed under intensive care in the hospital and during that time she was supported by a respirator, which enabled her to breathe, and in June of 2003, thanks to help of a foreign sponsor, we managed to buy a mobile respirator for her. She was able to leave the hospital then and come back home, however more funds are needed for her further treatment (more information in What are funds needed for and Methods of treatment.
